I commented on them briefly in the door bell ringers thread. What are they about? They came, passed out that Watchtower thing, left, I looked it over, definitely still don’t know. Anyone?

It is part of the door to door action I think; did he or she ask you about them? or did they just do that?

Interesting bunch. I’ve got a certain amount of respect for them- they practice what they preach, and have the strength of their convictions.

Yet….there seems to be a certain denial of some of the roots of Christian Legenda. The whole deal about not celebrating most Holidays because they were taken from pagan celebrations…well. That’s largely true. I don’t have a problem with celebrating them. They do. Like I said, they at least practice what they believe.

They also tend to take a rather literalist view of the Bible. Again, not my thing. Aggravating, actually, as the Bible is so much more majestic when taken as a mystical piece of literature.

And, they’re persistent buggers. I actually have a JW that delivers “Awake” every month. Not a bad publication, and a pretty good marketing tool. They only problem is that goes on about a 6 month on- off schedule, because I have to give them the boot when they start insisting on setting a baptism date.

Yeah, I know- I’ll talk to freaking anybody. I’m still on pretty good terms with the LDS missionaries, though. Until they piss me off.

Aww, I want Jehovies and Smithites! They’ve only dropped of their letters or come at truly inopportune times. And when I knew the Mormon missionaries, I was dating one of them, and the rest were female. I have an odd hangup against pointing out to shy young women that their belief system is quite the cracked foundation…

Jesus and the Apostles liked to take pagan ideas and things and turn them to God’s purposes. Sort of like showing the true, God-reflecting roots of world mythologies. OT sacrifices were based on sacrificing the symbols of pagan gods; diaspora or captive Jews adopted many local customs and transformed them into God-respecting ones; and as has also been noted elsewhere recently, Paul pointed to pagan altars to the Unknown God to demonstrate his faith. Thus I see little problem with transforming once-pagan holidays or practices into Christian ones. It helps to purge the untruths and allow cultures to retain some of their heritage.

Hi, Arandur, please see my post on page one of the best xmas song ever thread in the Get to know each other section. It’s a rant on Christians co-opting pagan holidays for themselves. I have a slightly different take on it, though. But at least I remembered where this one was(!)

P.S. Please also see my post on page two, I rarely apologize for my rants, but you will see what I mean…

Hey satol, its true what you say about the jehova wittnesses. My grandmother is one. They are good followers of their faith and there reasons are reasonable I guess. The whole birthdays thing though is a bit strange. Not celebrating it because that princess wanted the head of john the baptist fir her birthday, and also because it’s selfish. The family still gives my grandmother birthday and christmas gifts. She gladly accepts them although nobody get a thing in return :)))

And Jehova witness are also one of the only religions I know that have people knocking on doors besides my own(LDS).

Do you know a lot about it, Sain? It must have been difficult to get out of their clutches, I heard they hold on tight to their adherents.
So far, they haven’t gotten religious with me, it’s kinda like “Hi Ken, how are you today” (because we did introduce ourselves, they’ve been here 6 or so times so far this year). I can tell they want me to invite them in to chat or something, but always seem to show up at an inconvenient time. I will invite them in some time, but they don’t realize yet that it won’t be pretty. I’m always very nice to them, though, they are so polite, too.

ldsgal, that is so funny, I got the idea for this forum from one called Door bell Ringers. Go read it, you will love it. I didn’t know about the birthday thing. Blood transfusions bad, I knew. Are they the ones that don’t have doctors, but healers? (maybe christian scientists on that?)

Speaking of christian scientists, is there enough information among us to start a new thread on that? Any christian scientists out thar…? (Empress Kookoo’s booming voice echoes thru the vast wasteland, commanding all to comment)

And no I think those are the christian scientists. Start a thread, I’ve got a story about them!

Avatar kookookachoo Moderator 1,412 post(s)

Thanks, gal, I’ll start a new thread later on today and try it out, we could use the thread to do like, computer stuff for dummies, pointers direct from “I am Legend”, so it fits in. I’m too blitzed to do it now.

So, can JWs drink alcohol, what about lds folks? (You’re too young, tho, officially, right?)

Avatar LdsGal202 274 post(s)

idk if jehova’s witness can, LDS defenitely can’t.
