What are people’s opinions of the current and proposed actions of our government?
I am very worried. I see the government and various officials asking for more and more power and less and less accountability, while systematically working to take over the financial industry, the energy industry, the health care industry, perhaps even the auto industry.
They seek to remove private voting rights in favor of political union machines; exert more and more control over education in this country; propose silencing or preventing dissent; attempt to set wages and control prices; attempt to pass ex-post-facto tax law; attempt to limit or even remove our right to bear arms, disarming the populace; discussing the possibility of a world currency and abandoning the dollar internationally; and setting up such huge liabilities and public debt that the possibility of ever climbing out of our hole becomes more and more bleak.
Is anyone else seeing this? Is this even the United States anymore? Is this not what happened in countries like Germany, Italy, and Russia when they fell to their various forms of socialism?
Are we heading towards, as our only recourse for redress of these wrongs and infringements upon our Constitution, what the Founders recognized as a periodically-necessary Revolution?
As my little sister insightfully observed, federal politicians are the new oligarchy, the aristocracy that rules as it wishes with little care for the general populace, abandoning their promises and weaving a web of lies to pacify their subjects while they wield their power and money much like the privileged Party officials in communo-fascist countries.

Now, Aran, the way is clear for a discussion on your topic. But I’m not picking up the discussion right now, if that is allright.

I’ll do this reply in several parts, if I do it right…lol
Aran, don’t be so worried. I’m glad you’ve noticed that thing about officials with more power and less accountability. I dun remember your age. I seem to remember your age, but it escapes me due to my current short term memory loss…lol. I first noticed it at seven or eight years old when Johnson pushed through the Civil Rights Act while making sure that we’d be mired in Vietnam for at least 5 or 6 years. And, yes, I noticed it! I have read newspapers every day of my life since i was six years old. Ain’t media wonderful! Aran, this is the way it always has been. They are always trying to figure out how to do this crap, then do whatever it was, then show how they really DIDN’T do it, etc. Houdini would be jealous! Well, as you know, I’m 52 years of age. I’ve never figured out how to stop what’s going on. Oh, wait, it’s that no power thang, aina hey? They got it, we don’t… Another problem… they are systematically working to take over that stuff, I won’t re-list it… Well, yes, they are. What does it matter if they do? They’ve been mismanaged for years, why can’t the government kick a little butt while they point out that mismanagement to the American public and to those self-same corporate citizens. And they ARE citizens, according to Supreme Court decision. Time for a civics class, dear corporate citizens. They needed a good wake-up! Especially the predatory lenders! Good Gosh Almighty! There has been unconscionable behavior in some of those boardrooms, and all the way down the line. I’m not even talking about health, insurance, energy or the rest of them (yet) Hey, they are misbehaving! They screwed up our economy, but with plenty of help from our government, too. There’s plenty of blame to go around. I say, let them pick this to pieces for the next few months and let’s see if cooler heads prevail. The prisons that we can no longer afford are very full, even the white collar ones…lol. I’ll get to my next reply soon as I can Aran, OK sweetie? Love, Koo

I’m 27. I’ve known about the duplicity of government officials for as long as I’ve cared about government. I know that’s the way it’s always been. What makes it more troublesome now is that the power grab is so much greater now, and so extremely extra-Constitutional that if they get away with it the Constitution will no longer be any sort of check on government power anymore.
The government can regulate interstate commerce and thus ought to put limits on lending to prevent predatory lending. There is a place for government regulation to protect the public from fraud—and requiring bonus contracts on publicly-traded companies to be restricted to profit-making is a form of protecting the public from fraud.
However, government takeover of whole sectors of the economy is a complete abandonment of the Constitution and the founding principles of our country. We might as well use the Constitution for toilet paper. And show me anywhere in the world where government take over of the economy has been, long term, good for the country and the individual, and how that could work for the U.S.
I’m all for Town Halls (for Hope) and Tea Parties, because this country needs a revolution and a return to the principles that made us great. I don’t want any sort of armed revolution, so I’m trying to find and be supportive of those attempts that are peaceful.
